ON ABORTION

McCAIN CAMPAIGN WEBSITE NOTES...

"...John McCain believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned, and as president he will nominate judges who understand that courts should not be in the business of legislating from the bench."

McCAIN STATED...

I.
"I am pro-life and an advocate for the Rights of Man everywhere in the world,...because I know that to be denied liberty is an offense to nature and nature's Creator.  I will never waver in that conviction, I promise you."
  • (In a speech on 2/7/08 to Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) - link - to transcript)"

II.
At its core, abortion is a human tragedy. To effect meaningful change, we must engage the debate at a human level.
  • (On the official McCain campaign website.  Quote begins after the phrase "As John McCain has publicly noted..." - link)

III.
As my colleagues know, I've had a longstanding policy against promoting abortion as an acceptable form of birth control, except in cases of rape and incest.  I strongly believe that society and government have a legitimate interested in protecting life, born or unborn.
  • (Statement on S. 1200 - The Indian Health Care Improvement Act Ammendments of 2007' voted on 1/22/08 - link)

IV.
"Mr. President, today in Washington, D.C., thousands of people of all ages are taking part in the annual March for Life and staking a claim for the rights of the unborn. I commend them and am in awe of their great dedication to the cause of protecting life. I share their strong pro life beliefs.... I am and always have been pro-life and my record * during my tenure in Congress reflects my strong belief that life is sacred.
We must stand up for the rights of the unborn...
  • (Statement on the CHILD CUSTODY PROTECTION ACT for the Congressional Record, given Jan. 23, 2008--link - to transcript)

(* Sen. McCain's aforementioned "pro-life [voting] record" is somewhat in question.  In votes concerning strictly abortion, Sen. McCain does indeed show a very "pro-life" record, however, in votes concerning embryonic stem cell research, Sen. McCain's voting record is not "pro-life".  Since Sen. McCain seems to be refering (even if perhaps incorrectly) solely to the abortion issue, he has here received green.  On embryonic he receives red. - Solidarity Institute research team.)

McCAIN VOTED...

I.
[The Ammendment Purpose of S.Amdt 3330 was:  "To prohibit the provision of funds to grantees who perform abortions."]

Sen. McCain voted "Yea" in order to prohibit (forbid) taxpayer funds available to abortion providers outside of public hospitals.

II.
A. [Senate Bill 3 - Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003 - Amends the Federal criminal code to prohibit any physician or other individual from knowingly performing a partial-birth abortion, except when necessary to save the life of a mother whose life is endangered by a physical disorder, illness, or injury.]

B. [(Senate Bill 1692 - Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2000 was related to) The Ammendment Purpose of S.Amdt 3330 (of 1999) was: "To prohibit the provision of funds to grantees who perform abortions."]

Sen. McCain has voted to: prohibit funds from, ban, and criminalize partial-birth abortions.

  • (Sen. McCain has voted concerning this issue more than once.  For two primary examples of Sen. McCain's voting on partial-birth abortion see: A) Senate Ammendment 3330 on 10/21/1999 from THOMAS, Library of Congress - link; and B) Senate Bill 3 on 3/12/2003 from THOMAS, Library of Congress - link)

III.
[Senate Bill 2543 - The Child Custody Protection Act (1/22/08) "amends the federal criminal code to prohibit transporting a minor child across a state line to obtain an abortion (deems such transporting to be a de facto abridgment of the right of a parent under any law in the minor's state of residence that requires parental involvement in the minor's abortion decision). Makes an exception for an abortion necessary to safe the life of the minor."]

Sen. McCain cosponsored a bill "to prohibit taking minors across State lines in circumvention of ("to bypass") laws requiring the involvement of parents in abortion decisions."

MEANING OF COLOR CLASSIFICATIONS

I.
If a candidate receives a classification...

RED    , this does not necessarily mean that the candidate is 100% in favor of the non-negotiable issue, only that the candidate's views find (some) serious and clear departure from that of the Catholic Church.

YELLOW,
this does not mean that the candidate is 50% in favor of the non-negotiable issue, only that there are details of the candidate's views that require the voter's compitant understanding.

GREEN  , does not mean that the Church supports or endorses a specific candidate, only that the candidate agrees with the teaching of the Catholic Church on the specific non-negotiable.

II.
Therefore if both candidates receive the same classification on a specific non-negotiable this does not necessarily mean that the candidates' positions are similar, nor that they carry the same degree of similarity or difference from the teaching of the Catholic Church.
